A mere 40 pages to be written in the next 48 hours stand in my way of obtaining a diploma on May 18th. If I can squeeze these out of myself -- and they're on interesting topics actually, but I've progressed far beyond caring -- then it's done.
The next two weeks are a planned-to-the-brim whirl of themed parties and dances and expensive fancy dresses and champagne nights and dates and goodbyes and dorm reunions and social invitations and whatnot in celebration of I'm not sure what... in celebration of... something. Blah, blah, blah. I wish there didn't have to be a spectacle... I wish there were a fast-forward button, but sitting things out is even more lame these days.
Quite often I don't feel like celebrating, to be honest -- I'm actually quite tired of doing nothing. I'd love to just take one week maybe to go to California after school gets out and then I would really just like to start work. Soon. Very soon.
But right now it looks like I'm looking at a lot of dead space ahead if nothing comes through this week. Hello, Swampscott. Hiya, Monster.com.
I am excited about one thing, though: school's nearly over, which means I have all the time in the world for reading books that I want to read.
I'll write about this more next week, I suppose, if the nostalgia hits. Still, I was thinking today about the past four years. The whole schpiel wasn't how I had wanted it to be exactly (generally, one expects to have a job upon graduation), but it was still quite a ride. Yet let's step away from pessimism for a second: I'm fond of lists, so here's an abbreviated one of (positive) memorable moments in college.
Freshman Year, 2004-2005
- 90 degree move-in day
- the Chorale bonding retreat into the woods during a hurricane
- singing in chorus
- meeting the folks who became my friends and roommates throughout the 4 years
- the chorus trip to Italy!
Sophomore Year, 2005-2006
- editing for the Tufts Daily and more free tickets to arts stuff than I knew what to do with
- being busy and productive
- better mood than last year
- more friends
- a series of kick-ass-on-resume internships
- taking up accordion
- trip to Israel
Junior Year, 2006-2007
- if you don't know how my junior year was, who are you and why are you reading this? :-) I've had a whole blog on this, so this doesn't need more commentary...
- but I will take the moment to list visited countries: most of Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, Holland, Czech Republic, Russia, England; (also driving through Belgium, Luxembourg)
- meeting new friends, visits by old ones; a couple amazing international reunions with friends and family I hadn't seen in years... nearly decades?
- CONFIDENCE AND OPTIMISM
- la vida madrileña and fluency in Spanish and etc, etc, etc...
Senior Year, 2007-2008
- friends, old and new
- trip to Brazil!!
- growth all around
- a particularly bad season for chorus in terms of repertoire, but chorus nonetheless
- great on-campus apartment
- a ridiculous amount of free theater, opera, classical music, and musical tickets and my reviews published
- graduation (soon-to-be)
I'll add to this list next week, once the 40 pages are conquered. To rank the four years from favorite to least: junior, sophomore, senior, freshman seems about fair, though the middle two may fluctuate.
